African violet species are the ancestors of all cultivars. Some species tend to have a single crown, others are naturally multiple- crowned, and still others are tarilers. Saintpaulia species provide the genetic material for hybridizing and exhibitors should be encouraged to show and grow species to keep them available. Only through years of breeding and selecting have modern hybrids reached their present standards for symmetry, form, and quanity of bloom.
